Music Instructor Job Description

Wage: $18/hour Employee

Status: Full-Time

Accountability: Music Instructor reports to the Executive Director, Program Director, and Associate Director.

Job Summary: The Music Instructor will plan and conduct music-based classes that provide the participants an opportunity to develop their unique creative skills and guide program participants toward appropriate self-expression using instruments such as voice, guitar, piano, and ukulele. Experience with violin, viola, or cello is also desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create curriculum in response to inter-departmental collaboration and/or in response to Program Director requests.

  • Instruction of designated and approved curriculum.

  • Attend all staff meetings, rehearsals and concerts, and take an active role during these functions.

  • Follow all Creative Identity procedures in documentation of services, including, but not limited to: daily progress documentation, monthly participant summaries, service billing documentation, Special Incident Report documentation, seizure records, staff sign-in documentation, requests for funds or time off documentation, etc.

  • Inform Program Director of noteworthy observations regarding any participant’s health or safety concerns, progress or challenges needing attention, and contribute suggestions for individual goals and objectives (for the Individual Service Plan or ISP) based on Music Instructor’s best assessment.

  • Advocate for program participants whenever appropriate and necessary.

  • Maintain a safe working area environment for participants.

  • Follow protocol and assist in all aspects of the program, including, but not limited to: being prepared for classes before their scheduled start time, organizing participants for morning stretching class and assist them in participating, following class schedule for progress updating (5-10 minutes before class break times) and documentation, implementing timely class clean-up/break down, and overseeing the proper care and storage of all supplies and instruments.

  • Monitor general supervision of program participants.

  • Plan classes within program budget, and maintain instrument inventory and documentation of needed repairs, etc.

  • Plan and coordinate community concert show bookings and follow up confirmations; arrange appropriate staff and attendance with transportation staff; attend to aspects of presenting participant concerts, processing sales/donations, upkeep of inventories and related documentation.

  • Represent Creative Identity, its program, participants, and staff in a professional and promoting manner: at program events, in community contact with other businesses or persons, and in any interactions with parents/caregivers/agency representatives.

  • Provide direction/guidance to program aides, interns, fieldwork students, and volunteers as needed.

  • Ongoing development of musical arrangements and repertoire for program participants.

  • Dependable and on-time attendance on scheduled days, and timely notification (by 7:30 am of scheduled day) of absence due to illness.

  • Perform other related duties as required and/or assigned, especially with regards to serving the needs of the participants, including transportation of participants.

Inter-Relationships: Music Instructor will maintain appropriate direct contact with participants and Creative Identity staff, as well as some contact with participants’ family/support circle members.

Skills and Educational Requirements: Music Instructor must have a Bachelor level degree in Music, and the ability to perform all job duties as assigned; effectively and appropriately deal with behavior issues; be able to lift 25 lbs.; and communicate appropriately verbally and in writing. Experience with developmentally disabled populations is preferred.

Working Conditions: Music Instructor must use own vehicle for traveling to and from the program, shows and events. Occasional weekends and overtime will be required. Music Instructor must be able to meet flexible schedule and be open to all assignments.
